Framed in the understanding that we are in times of transition, this design study is the reported experience of the participation as a regular member that happens to be a designer in a creative community bringing forward a co-housing of shared ownership. It focuses in the ongoing co-design of the laundry service as a pivotal point, to explore as well other contributions. To date, design work has generated deliverables to support the decision to pilot an scenario of the laundry, and several other contributions that have emerged during the process, mainly focus on the current relationships in the community. It also offers a detailed description and a reflection of the co-design process experienced in first person, as well as some guidelines on the personal posture. Finally, based on this reported experience, opens up the discussion by confirming we are living in times of diffused design, and asking if design could be considered as well as a collective agency of creative change.

The Transition is driven everywhere by a myriad of people from all sorts of backgrounds, professions and skills. Designers and design in itself is also contributing to it. To characterise design led contributions to the transition is that Transition Design is emerging within the design community. This paper kickstarts a new research line on the topic in the local research group, and aims to gather current research and considered field practice on Transition Design to create a general characterisation of it regarding purpose, goal, design object, role, process and tools. From it, Transition Design is outlined as a collective design agency.

El Transition Design es un área emergente en la investigación y práctica del diseño, que pretende afrontar y dar soluciones a los cambios globales de la sociedad actual y futura a partir de criterios de sostenibilidad ambiental, social y económica. Este enfoque participa de la idea de que el diseño se comporta cada vez más como la construcción de escenarios sostenibles en entornos complejos.
En la actualidad las soluciones de diseño deben afrontar problemas complejos (wicked problems), como la contaminación, la pobreza, la pérdida de la biodiversidad, la crisis económica y los problemas de privacidad, por nombrar algunos. Más aún, todos estos problemas están interconectados y dependen de una variedad de sistemas interdependientes, que muestran diversos niveles de escala dentro de las esferas sociales y ambientales.

ABSTRACT The explosive growth in the usage of IEEE 802.11 network has resulted in dense deployments in diverse environments. Most recently, the IEEE working group has triggered the IEEE 802.11ax project, which aims to amend the current IEEE 802.11 standard to improve efficiency of dense WLANs. In this paper, we evaluate the Dynamic Sensitivity Control (DSC) Algorithm proposed for IEEE 802.11ax. This algorithm dynamically adjusts the Carrier Sense Threshold (CST) based on the average received signal strength. We show that the aggregate throughput of a dense network utilizing DSC is considerably improved (i.e. up to 20%) when compared with the IEEE 802.11 legacy network.

In this submission we, investigate the performance of DSC, - By utilizing intelligent RTS/CTS control method as means to mitigate the drawbacks associated with DSC and to improve performance gains. - recommend method to select threshold to enable RTS/CTS on each node. - study the impact of frame size on RTS enabled DSC stations.

A simulation-based study shows i) under asymmetric traffic, there is no gain in having DSC STAs but not DSC at the AP; ii) expected gains of DSC-AP in an apartment scenario; and iii) the optimal setting for DSC-AP.

Since the conception of the Internet of things (IoT), a large number of promising applications and technologies have been developed, which will change different aspects in our daily life. This paper explores the key characteristics of the forthcoming IEEE 802.11ah specification. This future IEEE 802.11 standard aims to amend the IEEE 802.11 legacy specification to support IoT requirements. We present a thorough evaluation of the foregoing amendment in comparison to the most notable IEEE 802.11 standards. In addition, we expose the capabilities of future IEEE 802.11ah in supporting different IoT applications. Also, we provide a brief overview of the technology contenders that are competing to cover the IoT communications framework. Numerical results are presented showing how the future IEEE 802.11ah specification offers the features required by IoT communications, thus putting forward IEEE 802.11ah as a technology to cater the needs of the Internet of Things paradigm.
